Supraerupted Teeth Causes and Treatment
Supraerupted teeth occur when a tooth grows downward or upward into the space of a missing opposing tooth. This typically happens when a lower back tooth is lost due to trauma or extraction. Without an opposing force to stop it, the upper tooth continues to erupt into the gap, which can interfere with chewing and bite alignment.
Common Causes of Supraeruption
- Premature loss of an opposing tooth (especially molars)
- Untreated tooth extractions
- Lack of dental restoration or tooth replacement
- Extended time without a prosthetic or implant
Problems Caused by Supraerupted Teeth
- Difficulty chewing due to bite interference
- Misalignment of the bite and jaw stress
- Risk of tooth fracture or abnormal wear
- Prevention of future implant or bridge placement
Treatment Options
TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices): Mini-implants that help reposition the supraerupted tooth without surgery.
Braces + TADs: Used in combination to move the over-erupted tooth back into ideal alignment.
Restorative Dentistry: Once the tooth is repositioned, the missing opposing tooth can be replaced with an implant, bridge, or denture.
Effective, Non-Surgical Treatment
Traditional braces alone are often not enough to correct supraerupted teeth. With the help of TADs, Dr. Deshmukh can gently move the tooth back into place, making room for future restorative work and improving your overall bite and function.
